Kayaks beside the dock on the lake at Luther Springs.
Living Lab Outdoor School
Bring your class to Luther Springs, and we’ll teach science outside, where it actually happens. Your students study the lake, the woods and the animals that live here, then get out on the water, try archery and take on the challenge course.
We build every visit around your grade and the unit you’re teaching.
Bring your class.
Day trips and overnight stays, planned with you.
Lessons that happen outside.
Every Living Lab lesson is hands-on and outdoors, and we match the lessons to your grade and what you’re teaching.

Fire Ecology
What students do
Fire Ecology
Students look for signs of past fires on our land, then run a simulation to see how fire helps and harms a forest.
Symbiotic Relationships
What students do
Symbiotic Relationships
Students explore how the species here depend on each other, and how that ties a whole habitat together.
Habitat Loss
What students do
Habitat Loss
Students see how people change the land, how that affects wildlife on the move, and why losing habitat is one of the biggest threats animals face.

What students do
Keystone Species
Students find signs of Florida’s keystone species on site, then draw food webs in teams to see why one animal can matter so much.

Where the lessons happen.
Luther Springs is pine woods, live oaks and a lake, right here in Hawthorne, FL. Your students walk out the door and straight into the lesson.
Homeschool families, come learn with us.
Living Lab has its own track for homeschool families and co-ops, so parents and kids can do the lessons side by side. Everyone is welcomed as family.
Ask us about rates for your family or your co-op when you call.

Questions teachers ask.
Here’s what most teachers want to know before they book. If yours isn’t here, give us a call.
Do we have to be a Lutheran school?
No. Public, private and charter schools and homeschool co-ops all come to Living Lab. Faith is part of who we are at Luther Springs, so worship is offered as an optional evening activity. It’s never required.
Can you match the lessons to what we’re teaching?
Yes. Tell us your grade and the unit you’re on, and we’ll choose lessons that fit it. We plan the program with you before you come, so the visit supports your curriculum calendar instead of interrupting it.
What does a visit include?
Our staff teach every lesson and bring the materials and gear, from life jackets to archery equipment and ropes course gear. Day trips include lunch. Groups that stay overnight eat in our dining hall and sleep in our cabins. One of our program staff is your point of contact the whole time you’re here.
Who watches the students?
Our trained staff lead every lesson and activity, and lifeguards are on duty for swimming and time on the lake. Your teachers and chaperones stay with their students the whole visit, and we’ll talk through how many adults to bring when we plan.
What if it rains?
Most lessons can move indoors or under cover, and every outdoor activity has a backup plan. Florida weather is part of the learning, too.
What should students bring?
Closed-toe shoes, a change of clothes for each day, a rain jacket, a water bottle and a notebook for field notes. Groups staying in cabins bring their own bedding. We’ll send the full packing list when you book.
