A place set apart.
Established in 1957 in the high mountains of North Carolina, Lutherock invites youth and adults into active outdoor experiences. Adventure, challenge, and discovery are central to its place in our shared ministry.
Lutherock is a Christian camp and conference center that offers summer camp for all ages, year-round programming and event space for conferences and retreats.
We provide spaces where all people can come experience Christ, community and nature in a new way.
Bea Youngdahl, in her Camp Lutherock jacket.
Where it began.
Bea and Duane Youngdahl first came to Lutherock for Sunday worship with Christ Lutheran Church in Greensboro. In those days it was a small retreat property that a handful of congregations visited several times a year. A year or two later Bea joined the Lutherock board, where she served for many years.
“When my car was crossing over the creek into camp, I’d stop and open the door. Then I’d dip my hand in the creek and feel the cold water. Then I knew I was in a special place.”
Bea Youngdahl
Then came the people who made it home.
1998
Jen Bacher
Jen Bacher’s first closing circle at Lutherock came in the summer of 1998. She went on to serve five summers on staff, and was later named the camp’s Program Director: “Camp is like family, home, and community all rolled into one.”
2023
Sharing the mountain
Under Deacon Missie Bonser, then its Program Director, Lutherock shared what it has. Three summer staff served with The Dwelling’s Spark’Dwell program in Winston-Salem, and at the start of the 2023-2024 school year every sixth grader and teacher in Avery County spent a day at camp.
